They have been in Pittsburgh since 1933, and are the fifth-oldest franchise in the league today. They twice merged with other teams during World War II due to the inability to dress enough players to form a complete team. They merged with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 1943 season and were called the Steagles. The 1944 season saw them merge with the Chicago Cardinals.
