NFL International Series: Winner?

Sunday the 25th October saw Wembley Stadium host the NFL International Series between Tampa Bay and New England.

For the 3rd time the regular season landed on English soil and the fans there were treated to a fantastic display of American Showmanship combined with an entertaining ball game. However, I am not here to talk about the individual game.

I am interested in the opinion of the American fan. Tampa Bay’s home season will only consist of 7 home games not the usual 8. Obviously, I’m sure their fans don’t have to pay for the missed game, but given the limited number of games, do American fans feel robbed of a game, or are they happy to share their sport with the UK fans.

As a Colts fan in England I was eager to get my first taste of Live NFL when I managed to get a ticket this year. I arrived in London and there was a fantastic atmosphere building through the street and tube stations of the capital. On my journey too Wembley I spoke with a whole variety of fans from aroung the UK and the USA and supporting a variety of teams, all appeared eager to experience a new game or keen to repeat previous years experience.

On my arrival at the Stadium I was thrilled with the good natured atmosphere of the fans outside the ground, there was a feel of celebration and anticipation of a wonderful event.

Entry to the Stadium proved to be even better, I have visited Wembley before for Metallica concerts and football (soccer), but the spectacle that was provided by 2 competing teams and the support staff was amazing.

I felt a sense of pride when the American National Anthem was played and was overjoyed when (from where I was stood) the entire stadium rose to it’s feet. I was also amazed when the English Anthem followed – It really highlighted to me the attention to detail that the organisers had gone to in order to make everyone feel a part of the event.

I was excited to return home to news on the radio that the NFL are planning to extend the International Series in the UK to 2 games, for me the chnce to watch more than 1 live game a year is almost a dream.

I hope the Amrican fans are as supportive of these games as I am, I would love to hear your opinions, and yes – it is my intention to venture to see a Colts game in the USA to compare.
