NFL Football Players Draft Injuries Rookies Season SuperbowlPublished: August 15, 2009
I am a Chicago Bears fan. I am not impartial when it comes to the NFL and the Chicago Bears. So when I watched the Broncos play the 49ers in their first preseason game, all I could think about was the Jay Cutler trade. I was truly curious to see how Kyle Orton would do with his new weapons in Denver.
It is inevitable that people will compare Kyle Orton and Jay Cutler, despite the fact that the trade was more about the draft picks Chicago sent to Denver than about acquiring Orton.
The comparison, not really fair from the start, made Jay Cutler look better and better with each pick Orton tossed on Friday night. Orton looked brutal and it made me glad he was a Bronco. It’s the best of both worlds for Bears fans, addition by subtraction (Orton), and addition by addition (Cutler).
Orton was moving the Broncos down the field and had Denver in the red zone when he tossed his first pick. Nate Clements made a nice play on a Kyle Orton ball thrown into the end zone for the interception.
Orton’s next pick was terrible. He set up a Dré Bly interception by staring down his receiver, telegraphing his throw like Alexander Graham Bell. The 49ers scored as a result of the play.
Orton was picked for a third time by backup strong safety Reggie Smith. He finished with a 32.6 passer rating, which speaks for itself on the kind of night it was.
In contrast, Chris Simms had a strong game for the Broncos. He went 11 for 17 for 142 yards and two touchdowns. He was not intercepted. Let the quarterback controversy begin in Denver.
And thank god I’m a Bears fan. The only thing strong about Orton was the smell.

So now we know. Micheal Vick will be suspended for the first four games of this season. This is the judgement handed down by Roger Goodell today. The arguments for and against his reinstatement have already started to fly. On one side there are the chirps and tweets of support from NFL players who support Vick. The other side is made up of Dog lovers and PETA. But put the moral issue aside for a minute because the real reason Mike Vick is back is a business one. This is still the NFL after all.
Roger Goodell just doesn’t want Vick in the upstart UFL. With Vick this new league would be something to watch, like a car accident. Without him it will fail. It’s that simple.
So the NFL will now have to absorb a lot of bad publicity. You can bet that PETA has an ad campaign ready to roll out in any city that signs Vick. But he is back. A team may take a chance on him now that the league has. As the old saying goes ‘Any publicity is good publicity’, even if it is ‘Bad Newz’.
