Kansas City Chiefs Release WR Mark Bradley; It’s About Time!

After dropping two more balls last Sunday’s loss versus the Browns, the Chiefs release Mark Bradley, according to ESPN. It is about time!

The 27-year-old Bradley caught two touchdowns for 320 yards. The Chiefs had 10 drops vs. Cleveland in the 41-34 loss Sunday. The Chiefs are now 3-11 and are starting to make moves for next season.

Bradley really has cost the Chiefs a couple of much needed touchdowns. Two weeks ago when Kansas City took on the Buffalo Bills, Mark Bradley was unable to bring in two Matt Cassel passes that would have surely resulted in touchdowns.

Mark Bradley leads the league in dropped passes with 11. Teammate Dwayne Bowe is second in the NFL with 10 drops, and he missed four games.

The unofficial record for dropped passes by a team is 52, the Chiefs have dropped 46 with two games still to play. The record was set by the 1992 Dolphins, according to STATS LLC.

Haley insisted Bradley’s departure was not due solely to the passes he dropped against the Browns. He also caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Matt Cassel that tied the game 34-34 with 2:20 to go.

But, you have to think that the release had something to do with the excessive drops by Mark Bradley, who played his college ball at Oklahoma.

Bradley had an OK year last season when he was acquired during the middle of the season. He had three-touchdown-catches and 380 yards altogether.

Replacing him will be Lance Long, who has emerged as a receiver that can be counted on, at times, to make the play needed to cross the sticks.

Russel Okung and Kansas City Chiefs a Match from Heaven?

The Chiefs have had a season that have many fans wondering what in the world are Todd Haley and Scott Pioli thinking.

There are many glaring weaknesses and many other positions that will become bad if the Chiefs can’t improve.

Quarterback Matt Cassel has not put up very good numbers at all. Most of the interceptions are his fault but five or six of them are not really his fault.

So there really is no way to evaluate Matt Cassel after this season.

Every Chiefs fan, including myself, can’t wait until April 22. That is the day the NFL Draft kicks off. It starts off at 7:30 p.m., and the Chiefs will most likely be picking in the top five for the third straight year—which along with the Rams is the current longest streak in the NFL.

Who do the Chiefs need?

I have two words for you, Russell Okung.

Okung is a monster at 6’8″ 299lbs. He is surprisingly athletic for his size and has huge hands and quick feet. He would either play at right tackle or he would stay at left tackle and Brandon Albert would move to guard, where he played in college.

Okung is rated as the sixth best prospect, according to ESPN.com. The No. 1 prospect is safety Eric Berry.

Safety is probably No. 2 on the needs list for the Chiefs. So who would you rather have, Okung or Berry?

The Chiefs really need to add some weapons though. If I were Scott Pioli I would take Okung and then a wide receiver and a safety with my two second round picks. After that, I might draft another lineman and then get a running back, maybe a linebacker, and with my last pick I would take another wide receiver.

The Chiefs have nine total picks at the moment. They received a second round pick from Atlanta when they traded Tony Gonzalez last summer, and the Chiefs received a sixth round pick from Miami for Tyler Thigpen.

This draft is probably the most important for the Chiefs in a long time. If the Chiefs cannot get a player that has Pro Bowl potential, the Chiefs will be in a deep depression for many years to come, but let’s face it, when was the last time the Chiefs had a good draft?

I have one Christmas wish for the Kansas City Chiefs—draft Russell Okung!

Kansas City Chiefs Could Play Spoiler

There is no better feeling than preventing your rival from making it to the playoffs. Whether it is in college football and you cost your archrival a chance at the national championship, or in the NFL to cost them a wild card spot in the playoffs.

The Chiefs can do that in consecutive weeks when they take on the Cincinnati Bengals and the hated Denver Broncos. If Denver were to lose it will almost surely cost the Broncos a shot at a wild card spot. The Bengals would most likely have to lose the next one to weeks to miss out of the playoffs.

The Chiefs will have an opportunity to beat a Bengals team which is currently 9-5, but only one game in front of the Steelers. A loss would have Cincinnati spinning out of control and possibly out of the playoffs.

The Chiefs are currently 3-11 and has absolutely no business winning either game, but isn’t that what the NFL is all about. Anything can happen on any given Sunday.

The Broncos dominated the Chiefs in their first meeting, beating the Chiefs 44-13. A loss to the Chiefs now would be horrible if you are a Broncos fan. It would be a huge disappointment, especially since Denver started the season hot, going 6-0 out of the gates. But, since that 6-0 start they have gone 2-6 the next eight games.

I can’t think of any better Christmas present than a couple wins to end the season. Those wins would propel this young Chiefs into the offseason and would give them all kinds of momentum.

The chances of the Chiefs even winning one of these games are very slim, but both games…give me a break! I have seen weirder things but Chiefs fans, you better have a backup Christmas present just in case.

Kansas City Chiefs: Can You Blame Clancy Pendergast?

Published: December 21, 2009

About the only thing good about the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense this season has been the play of Tamba Hali.

The Chiefs have allowed 30 or more points six times this year. In case you don’t know, that’s not good!

But can you blame first year defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast? Most of the starting defensive players were already there so at this point, no.

Should we give him another year to hopefully get his guys in there to improve this offense?

Yes. The Chiefs are actually giving up less points on defense than last year, last season the Chiefs were giving up 27.5 pts/game, but this season only 22 pts/game. The Chiefs definitely need to keep Pendergast here.

The major problem is on offense.  This season they are scoring just 17 pts/game.  The average would be even lower if you were to take out the Cleveland game where they somehow scored 34 points.

They have actually improved on defense, but the offense is still bad. The main reason for this is the poor play of the offensive line. Matt Cassel has no time in the pocket and Jamal Charles may be one of the quickest emerging running backs in the NFL, but how good would he be with a good O-line?

Jamal Charles is looking like the next good/great running back of the Chiefs. The Chiefs can maybe draft Russell Okung of Oklahoma State with their top five pick, and then immediately try improving the receiving corp to give Matt Cassel somebody to throw to when he has time in the pocket.

This offense has potential, and head coach Todd Haley is running a system that could work if they had a few more weapons.

Matt Cassel has potential, but with this O-line not even Peyton Manning would survive. Okay, maybe he would.  Peyton is the best QB I have seen in my lifetime.

The Chiefs are like a jigsaw puzzle. They need to find the right pieces and put them together. If we can do that, the Chiefs will be able to get back to the “Glory Days” (going 8-8 in a season).

Kansas City Chiefs: Three Steps To Rebuilding the Fanbase

Published: December 20, 2009

OK, so after not watching the Chiefs on television for the first time in my lifetime, I had a lot of things on my mind as I listened to Len Dawson and Mitch Holthus for three straight hours.

How can the Chiefs rebuild their fanbase so we can avoid these blackouts? Here are three main ways to sell tickets.

1. Here is the most obvious way, WIN! Assuming the Chiefs lose out and finish at a whopping 3-13, the Chiefs would have lost 39 games in three seasons, which is worst in the NFL.

If the Chiefs can just give a sliver of hope they will sell out the stadium. They have plenty of fans, but nobody wants to spend that kind of money in this economy to watch a horrible football team play.

2. Draft somebody that could become a fan favorite. Last year’s draft was pitiful. They took Tyson Jackson, who was a major reach and has been well below average so far, and after that the only player that sees much playing time is the kicker they took with the last pick in the draft, Ryan Succop, who has been the best pick so far.

One guy that jumps out in this year’s draft is Nebraska lineman Ndamukong Suh. I know, he doesn’t fit the 3-4 defense but he is a guy that will sell tickets. But really they should probably go after O-line because that really is where they need to improve the most.

3. Give the fans something free when they come to the games. The Royals do this sometimes, they have “T-Shirt Tuesdays” where the first 10,000 or 20,000 fans get a free shirt when they go through the gates.

If the Chiefs were to do something like that, they would sell tickets, and the Chiefs fans would feel like they got something out of the deal when the Chiefs are losing by four scores in the second quarter or giving up 41 points to a horrible Cleveland Browns team.

Whatever they do, I hope point No. 1 (winning games) happens sooner rather than later so we can avoid black outs in future seasons.

Matt Cassel: Are We Able To Tell Is He’s Worth The Money?

Published: December 19, 2009

Matt Cassel has been on the ground a lot this season. At times a three-step-drop still was not enough time for Cassel to read the coverage and make a pass. Now, Chiefs fans are and maybe should be starting to think that Cassel has been a waste of money.

He has thrown 13 touchdown passes but also 13 INT’s so there is plenty of reasons to think the Chiefs wasted money on the fifth year quarterback out of USC.

Not so fast, if you have watched one quarter of Chiefs football you have witnessed horrible protection and a lot of dropped balls by receivers this season.

Cassel has been sacked 40 times this season which is second in the NFL behind Aaron Rogers of the Green Bay Packers.

The Chiefs also lead the NFL in drops. If you watched the Buffalo game last Sunday you saw that Mark Bradley dropped two deep passes that would have resulted in touchdowns. Both of those would have been caught by most NFL receivers and the Chiefs would have beat the Bills.

As of now I’m not so sure we have seen enough to make a fair judgement on Cassel. He has virtually no time and when he is able to get it off, the ball is dropped.

The other thing you have to take note of with a quarterback that gets sacked a lot is that when he does get time he develops something called “happy feet”. Happy feet occurs when a quarterback, like Cassel, feels the pressure when he actually has time in the pocket.

He knows he is going to get hit anytime so he will tend to try to escape the pocket or he moves his feet more than usual and is unable to set his feet and make a good throw. Happy feet usually results in a negative play for the offense.

The Chiefs need to get some help on that offensive line. They need to go after Russell Okung of Oklahoma State and then get any free agent that could help out.

After that, maybe in the second round of the draft they desperately need to go after a wide receiver.

If they are able to do that I think we will finally be able to get a better look at Matt Cassel. He has talent, and he has shown it, he just needs time!

Glenn Dorsey vs. Tyson Jackson: Who Has Been More Disappointing?

Published: December 19, 2009

commentNo Comments

When the names Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson appear in your mind, many thoughts pop up.

Some good, some bad, but when you draft two defensive lineman in the top five during the last two drafts, you hope there is a bit more production to this point. But, to a certain extent there has been.

Glenn Dorsey’s rookie season gave off some mixed feelings, he had just 46 total tackles (32 solo) and only sacked the quarterback once.

But in his “Sophomore” year, when some players production drops off, Dorsey’s has slowly increased. With two games left to go, Glenn has 48 total tackles (two more than last year) and four more solo tackles (36) than in ’08.

Tyson Jackson, on the other hand, has just 25 total tackles. Neither Dorsey nor Jackson has recorded a sack this season. I have been a little disappointed so far in the play of the rookie, Tyson Jackson.

We also must note that defensive linemen are the slowest positions to produce. Not many D-lineman go to the Pro Bowl as a rookie, it takes a couple years to develop. So to you Chiefs fans, the only thing I can tell you is to just be patient.

Patience is one word Chiefs fans are sick of hearing. But the fact is, the Chiefs won’t be competing for a Super Bowl anytime soon, so all we can do is just be patient and hope for the best.

But now to the main question to this article, who has been the “biggest disappointment” so far? Glenn Dorsey or Tyson Jackson.

Glenn Dorsey had the most hype coming into his rookie season; many “experts” thought for sure he would win Rookie of The Year honors. He instead wasn’t even in consideration come the end of the season.

Tyson Jackson, as everybody knew, was a reach at No. 3 and there wasn’t nearly as much hype. He statistically has not performed well at all. But he really didn’t put up great numbers at LSU either.

The Chiefs drafted him No. 3 overall because he was a “perfect fit” for the 3-4 defense they were switching to. He was extremely quick off the line of scrimmage. The only problem with that is that in the NFL, offensive lineman are much quicker as well.

I hope Jackson and Dorsey are both able to be worth the money the Chiefs forked over to them, but will they?

Dorsey is just 24 and Jackson is only 23, so their future still could become pretty bright, but if they don’t turn out to be considered some of the best in the business, the Chiefs defensive line could and probably would be in deep turmoil for years to come.

So who has been the biggest disappointment so far? My pick is Tyson Jackson, because of where we drafted him and the lack of productivity we have received in return.

Kansas City Chiefs Draft Board: Eric Berry, Russell Okung?

Published: December 16, 2009

commentNo Comments

The Chiefs are currently 3-10 and heading for another top-five draft spot in April’s draft. Me, along with many Chiefs fans are now looking forward to that date, but with so many holes who should the Chiefs take?

Here is the top five players the Chiefs should select in the first round:

1. OT, Russell Okung; 6’5″, 300 lbs.; Oklahoma State

Russell Okung was one of the most dominant players on the offensive side of the ball this season. He has great size and quick feet. He definitely would improve the Chiefs offensive line, but who wouldn’t!

He might be the guy to either move Brandon Albert to the right side or to guard. Either way Okung would provide quarterback Matt Cassell with some much needed time in the pocket.

2. S, Eric Berry; 5’11”, 203lbs.; Tennessee

Berry may have been the most feared player in the SEC this season. Nobody wanted to throw the ball against Tennessee with this ball-hawking safety back there.

I have suffered all season watching the poor play from the Chiefs safeties. The Chiefs made a mistake in cutting Bernard Pollard before the season and have suffered since.

Eric Berry reminds a lot of people of Ed Reed, hes a hard hitter, and a quarterback’s worst nightmare. If Russell Okung is off the board Eric Berry (assuming he enters the draft) should be playing at Arrowhead for years to come.

3. OT, Trent Williams; 6’5″, 308lbs.; Oklahoma

Williams is a monster at that tackle position. Maybe not as quick as Russell Okung but he definitely has the tools to be as good. He has huge hands and with his body he would make a huge improvement to any offensive line, and if Okung and Berry are off the board he could be a Chief.

4. ILB Rolando McClain; 6’3″, 245 lbs.; Alabama

Another weakness on the Chiefs defense is the linebacking corps. Tamba Hali has had a great season but other than that they have been pretty weak. Linebackers are key to a 3-4 defense and with McClain as a Chief it would help send K.C. in the right direction.

Mike Vrable has been OK but he won’t be around very much longer, Rolando McClain would surge that linebacking crew from one of the worst, to at least a little bit better group.

The last time we drafted a linebacker in the first round the Chiefs selected Derrick Johnson. He has been sub-par thus far in his career but maybe with a couple talented players around them he can shine.

5. DT, Ndamukong Suh; 6’4″, 295lbs.; Nebraska

I will be the first to say that the Chiefs do not need any more defensive linemen. With the drafting of Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson the past two years you wouldn’t think they would go there again.

Suh has been unbelievable this season. 12 sacks this season with 82 tackles overall. Suh has been everywhere. He also caught four interceptions returning two of them to the house. This guy is amazing!

Don’t expect Suh to fall to the Chiefs. The Browns, Lions, or Rams are sure to pick this guy.

But think about it for a second: on the d-line would be Tyson Jackson, Ndamaukung Suh, and Glenn Dorsey. That has the potential to be one of the best lines in the NFL.
