Are the New York Jets ready to compete for the AFC East Championship this season?
The answer to that question in my opinion is a definitive yes.
Everybody knows the offensive line is actually the premier spot because this is your foundation. If your line can’t open holes, you have no running game. If your offensive line can’t keep your quarterback on his feet, then he is not going to complete many passes.
Fortunately for the Jets, this is one area the Jets excelled at last year and there is no reason this line, which returns all starters from last year except Baker, can’t perform at the same level.
On to the running backs, which again performed at an all pro level.
First we have the little scat back, Leon Washington. He is the perfect compliment back to whoever the power back is. Leon has soft hands and can catch out of the backfield, and is one of the most elusive players in the open field, not to mention his speed and quickness.
Now, Thomas Jones is a strong, powerful back. He can run people over if he needs to, but first he needs to show up and stop this contract dispute. He was happy with four years and $20 million when he signed it, and has collected more then half of the salary while fulfilling only two years of it.
The draft pick of Shonn Greene I believe is a great one. Hopefully he can become the young pounding back that we have needed since Curtis Martin retired. All three backs will compliment each other and if used properly will all still be fresh come the last quarter of the season and into the playoffs.
Now lets address the infamous quarterback position. I was all for Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff competing because I didn’t believe the Jets could move up high enough to get Mark Sanchez in the draft.
Now that you have used the number five pick, you have to give him a chance. I like all the qualities that Sanchez seems to have, especially his leadership abilities. This kid gathers the offensive unit the night before rookie mini camp begins and gets 18 plays installed.That is quite impressive and shows the initiative and leadership I want in the Jets starting quarterback.
I believe you have a solid running game behind Sanchez where the defenses will creep people into the box and keep him on his feet. I think he is going to win a lot of games.
Who Sanchez will throw the ball to seems to be everyone’s biggest question. I believe the Jets are going to be fine. If David Clowney didn’t break his collar bone in preseason last year, the NFL would have learned what a play maker he is.
Cotchery on one side, Clowney on the other and Stuckey in the slot.
You add Dustin Keller down the seam and that sure sounds like a lot of fire power for any quarterback, especially when your starting two backs can both catch a dump off and make things happen.
If I was a defensive coordinator, I would be having nightmares before playing this offense.
Every thing I read talks about how impressive the Jets defense is going to be this year, and I totally agree with them. What I want people to start doing is stop questioning the offense and praising the defense.
When you look at the New York Jets, give the offense it’s praise as well. All these weapons, how can the Jets not be ready for flight to the top of the AFC East and the rest of the NFL?
