NFL Football Players Draft Injuries Rookies Season SuperbowlPublished: December 2, 2009
Last week’s “Coin Flip” article was destroyed before it even started. We pitted Matt Ryan against Donovan McNabb, vouching for Ryan against a hapless Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense, only to see the second-year star to hit the sidelines with a turf toe injury before he could do any damage.
It didn’t stop there. We also had a match-up between two injured running backs (Cedric Benson and Michael Turner) who had the possibility of returning last week, and you didn’t stand a chance going with either of them. Benson didn’t even suit up, while Turner’s triumphant return ended with 12 carries and under 40 yards, as well as a return to the sidelines after he re-injured his ankle.
We’re sticking with guys who aren’t riding gimpy legs into Week 13, and encourage you to rely on our advice this week:
Jay Cutler, QB, CHI (vs. STL) VS. Eli Manning, QB, NYG (vs. DAL)
Cutler has been awful for a large portion of the season, and no amount of yardage or touchdowns can hide his 20 interceptions (and counting). Don’t get us wrong, we loved his potential going into the season, and there’s no dispute that he has had some strong performances this season, but there’s also no arguing that he’s been a huge disappointment.
Eli Manning, on the other hand, has been very inconsistent since the Giants 5-0 start. He did drop in two nice performances in the two games prior to Week 12, but his recent foot issues (regardless of what he says) have to make you wonder if he’s really a safe bet. Factor in that he’s playing in a tough division game, and he has the makings to disappoint on a Cutler-level.
Verdict: Manning has all the potential in the world, just like Cutler, and we still like the offense around him, but the match-up just isn’t there. Cutler, on the other hand, faces a very beatable Rams defense, and quite frankly, the guy is due. Go against your gut and run with ours: Start Cutler.
Ray Rice, RB, BAL (@GB) VS. Thomas Jones, RB, NYJ (@ BUF)
This is an interesting match-up because both of these backs have been fantasy stalwarts for most of 2009, and really, in any given week, have the role and ability to save your team. Rice is in a brutal division that does a great job against the run (except for Cleveland), yet he’s still put up elite numbers on a consistent basis. The week-to-week match-up is the complete opposite for Jones, however, yet the backs’ numbers are very comparable.
Rice is going up against a very solid Green Bay Packers defense this Monday, one that has done a great job containing running backs in the past three games, yet still has a bit of trouble on screens (as most teams do). In a match-up of two beastly running backs, their respective match-ups have to be the deciding factor.
Verdict: Rice is very hard to leave on your bench, but if you have the choice between the two, you can’t pass up Jones’ beautiful match-up with a very leaky Bills run defense. Jones broke-out of 200+ yards on them last time, and that was with Mark Sanchez throwing five picks. How do you like his chances this week? Needless to say, TJ is our guy.
Jeremy Maclin, WR, PHI (@ATL) VS. Terrell Owens, WR, BUF (vs. NYJ)
Maclin has been a solid model for consistency since taking over Kevin Curtis’ job as the Eagle starter opposite of DeSean Jackson, while T.O. has finally developed some chemistry with a quarterback not named Romo, McNabb, or Garcia. Trent Edwards wasn’t giving him any love, but who would have thought Ryan Fitzpatrick would do the trick?
Maclin has a tasty match-up against a weak Atlanta pass defense, and also has some nice luck with DeSean Jackson likely out with a concussion. If D-Jax says he can’t go (which he did), we believe him. Owens, on the other hand, although on an absolute tear the past two weeks, and self-proclaiming that “he’s back”, has a brutal match-up against the Jets’ stud cover man, Darrelle Revis.
Verdict: Owens has looked so good lately, that we still like him to put up WR3 numbers and, at the very worst, he should be a decent Flex play. But his match-up is trash compared to Maclin’s, and we know the Eagles love to throw the ball. That, and we have a little more faith in Donovan McNabb than Fitzpatrick. Roll with Maclin.

The Colts and Saints are yet again in the top two spots after the Colts wiped away an early deficit to dismantle the Texans and the Saints plowed past the Patriots.
Both teams seem to be clicking at exactly the right time, forcing us all to truly wonder if we can see two teams go 16-0 in the regular season.
Possibly a more important question: are either of them even the best team in the league? Quite likely it is indeed the Colts, but the thought needs to be discussed.
Read on to see where your team ranks in Week 13’s NFL Power Rankings :
1. New Orleans Saints (11-0)
Drew Brees delivered one of his classic flawless performances, showing us with every touchdown pass why New Orleans is undefeated and still the class of the NFC, and quite possibly the NFL.
2. Indianapolis Colts (11-0)
After comebacks, close, narrow wins, and crushing defeats against lesser opponents, we thought we saw it all from this team. And quite honestly, after that first half we thought the streak was over. Doubt this Colts team no more .
3. Minnesota Vikings (10-1)
Eleven games in and it’s safe to say Brett Favre is still playing at a high level. They obviously have to be behind any undefeated team in the rankings, but is anyone else starting to wonder if this is actually the best team in football?
4. San Diego Chargers (8-3)
The Chargers just keep on spreading a dominant effort on their opponents, and they’re spreading it on thick. If they keep their eye on the prize and don’t get complacent, the division is theirs.
5. New England Patriots (7-4)
There will be no questions about where New England ranks after Monday night’s game. They clearly don’t have the fire power to both keep up with the Saints offense, nor get past their improving defense.
6. Cincinnati Bengals (8-3)
They squeaked past a terrible Browns team just one week after falling to the Raiders. Considering how well Bernard Scott and Larry Johnson have been playing, I think it looks like the passing game is holding this team back.
7. Dallas Cowboys (8-3)
They put on a show against a supposedly solid Oakland pass defense. That’s awesome, but you have to wonder if they’re ever going to truly get their ground game going.
8. Philadelphia Eagles (7-4)
They almost blew a “gimme ” win against the Redskins. Which should be more telling—the fact that they won in dramatic fashion, or the fact that they had to?
9. Green Bay Packers (7-4)
The offensive line is doing a better job in protection and run-blocking, and the defense is doing what the 3-4 advertises. Albeit not against outstanding competition, but Green Bay will take the positives where they can get them. A Monday night showdown with the 6-5 Baltimore Ravens may prove if this team is for real .
10. Arizona Cardinals (7-4)
We’ll give them a mulligan for losing to a hot team when they didn’t have their starting quarterback, but really they had this game won. If that defense is going to let Vince Young march 99 yards for a game-winner, what kind of an answer will it have for Brett Favre?
11. Baltimore Ravens (6-5)
I know it wasn’t Ben Roethlisberger behind center, but the Ravens still did a heck of a job on defense and closed-out a game they needed badly. Until they blow another game that they should have won, they’re right in the thick of things.
12. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-5)
Mike Tomlin has vowed or the Steelers to march into December with a vengeance. Let’s hope that march includes Ben Roethlisberger.
13. Denver Broncos (7-4)
Their rebound game came against a fellow “four-straight loss” team, but a win is a win. They really took it to the Giants and showed us why they started the season 6-4. But is it too late to have a serious shot at their division?
14. Tennessee Titans (5-6)
Make it five in a row for the Comeback Player of the Year front-runner Vince Young and the crazy running of Chris Johnson. What breaks next week—the Colts streak, or the Titans?
15. Jacksonville Jaguars (6-5)
They had us thinking that they were a well-balanced team, but after a dispiriting loss to the 49ers, it looks like they are as average as we thought they were to start the season. Jack Del Rio can start counting the days until he receives a pink slip.
16. New York Giants (6-5)
How annoyed are NFL fans with this Giants team? They’re only hanging around in the playoff picture because of their cakewalk schedule to start the season, yet they have a very realistic shot at grabbing a wild card spot despite losing five of their last six.
17. Atlanta Falcons (6-5)
That was a heroic effort by Chris Redman and the rest of the under-manned Falcons offense to come back and beat the Bucs. That’s great and all, but now what? Losing Matt Ryan and/or Michael Turner for any amount of time could quickly kill this team’s new-found energy.
18. Miami Dolphins (5-6)
What happened to the resurgent Miami Dolphins that were suddenly only a Patriots loss away from fighting for the division? They have all they can do now to just sniff the playoffs the rest of the way.
19. New York Jets (5-6)
Run the ball with Thomas Jones and limit Mark Sanchez to 20 or less passes. That’s how you win if you’re the Jets, and this one over the Panthers was Exhibit A.
20. Houston Texans (5-6)
They had the Colts right where they wanted them and then they flat-out blew it. Both sides of the ball choked and let Peyton Manning will his team to an 11-0 start and the division title. Don’t worry Kris Brown, we can’t blame you for this one. No, this loss hangs on Matt Schaub and that pitiful second-half offense.
21. San Francisco 49ers (5-6)
They gave it all they could in the second half against the Packers last week, and finished the job with a convincing win against the Jaguars. They’re down, but not out just yet.
22. Buffalo Bills (4-7)
What a nice win against a solid Miami club. Just when you think this team is about ready to cash it in, they look like they have the potential to make a nice little run.
23. Carolina Panthers (4-7)
Will this finally be the week we don’t see Jake Delhomme under center? For the sake of all Carolina fans, the entire NFL world prays it is so.
24. Chicago Bears (4-7)
You can’t blame it all on Jay Cutler, but a large chunk of it does have to fall on his shoulders. This isn’t just about him, the offensive line, or a defense clearly in decline. This team looks like it needs to completely start over.
25. Seattle Seahawks (4-7)
So they beat the Rams twice this year. Hooray. Still, is there any question that Justin Forsett should be the starter at running back going forward?
26. Kansas City Chiefs (3-8)
They really took it to the chin against San Diego on Sunday. What a beat-down. They were showing some true grit in the past few weeks. Has that all been erased or can they regroup and get to respectability?
27. Oakland Raiders (3-8)
So much for their stingy pass defense being an asset. Tony Romo and Miles Austin officially made this team a complete mess, and in front of the nation, no less.
28. Washington Redskins (3-8)
That was a tough game against Philadelphia and really showed that this team has a ton of fight in it. Jason Campbell isn’t making the strides you’d like to see, but he isn’t lying down and giving up either.
29. St. Louis Rams (1-10)
They’re playing tough and doing things the right way, but Seattle just wanted it more this week. It also doesn’t help when you have Kyle Boller under center. Keith Null to the rescue?
30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-10)
For the third straight week, I retract a statement regarding Raheem Morris. He really had them playing some inspired football. Atlanta was down Michael Turner and Matt Ryan, but still, inspired, nonetheless.
31. Detroit Lions (2-9)
Let’s just say that the Lions have it hard enough without Matthew Stafford throwing interceptions for touchdowns. I still think it was the right idea to start him from day one, but boy, is he learning through some bad games.
32. Cleveland Browns (1-10)
They kept it close with a supposedly strong Bengals team, despite having almost no offense to speak of all game. The loss of Shaun Rogers in the middle kills an already atrocious defensive unit.

Due to headaches stemming from his concussion he received in Week 11, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not compete in Week 12 ‘s matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.
FOX’s Jay Glazer has reported, via Twitter, that Roethlisberger will miss this week’s action due to exercise-induced headaches, which has prompted the coaching staff to give him an extra week for recovery.
Given the effects concussions have had on other stars such as Clinton Portis and Brian Westbrook this season, the Pittsburgh management chose to be extra careful with their franchise quarterback.
Fantasy Perspective: This is bad news for the Pittsburgh passing offense, which was slated for a big day against a very vulnerable Ravens pass defense. However, former third string quarterback Dennis Dixon will assume the starting duties. Back-up Charlie Batch sustained a wrist injury (out 3-6 weeks) in last week’s game, forcing the second year quarterback into the role.
This move will also increase the value of Rashard Mendenhall, as he will be leaned on even more than usual, despite facing a very solid Baltimore rush defense.
Read on for other updates on player injuries around the league :
Steven Jackson Iffy For Sunday
Jackson missed three straight practices this week, and despite reporting via Twitter that his sore back is “getting better”, he’s still expected to be a full-blown game-time decision on Sunday.
Jackson makes for a great play (as usual) against Seattle this week, but the Rams signing of Chris Ogbonnaya off their practice squad should raise some eyebrows.
If you have an even remotely decent RB option available, we suggest sitting S-Jax this week instead of facing the possibility of him landing you a goose egg.
Julius Jones to be a Game-time Decision
We’re getting behind Justin Forsett completely this week, as we don’t trust Julius Jones and his bothersome injured ribs. Jones has reportedly been dealing with a bruised lung as well, and considering Forsett’s solid performances the past two weeks, his role is expected to be great enough to give him solid value going forward, regardless of Jones’ status.

Even with all the Start/Sit and Waiver Wire advice in the world, sometimes fantasy owners are left to be frantic, panicking over their decisions going into Sunday’s games .
In Fantasy Coin Flip, we take a look at three different positions and a possible matchup between two players of solid value that could be fighting it out for a spot in your team’s line-up this week. Read on for some information and analysis that could help push you in the right direction:
Donovan McNabb , QB, PHI (vs. WAS) VS. Matt Ryan, QB, ATL (vs. TB)
This is an interesting matchup, as McNabb would be the usual consensus pick, but with his last performance against a reasonably tough Washington pass defense in mind, Matt Ryan definitely deserves his argument to be heard here.
McNabb had a great day against the San Diego Chargers two weeks ago and had another solid performance against the Chicago Bears, but after seeing how the Redskins held Tony Romo and the Cowboys passing offense in check for almost four quarters, we’re not in love with McNabb’s chances.
His inconsistency, past performance, and the Redskins defensive potential beg us to consider all options.
Ryan, on the other hand, has been progressing in recent weeks, and was solid last week in a loss to the New York Giants. His stud receiver, Roddy White, looks to be fully healthy, and his star running back, Michael Turner, could possibly return this week.
Verdict: Regardless of their individual arguments, Ryan is going up against a still pathetic Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense, and has to be the play this week, making him a “coin flip” suggestion for the second week in a row.
Cedric Benson, RB, CIN (vs. CLE) VS. Michael Turner, RB, ATL (vs. TB)
It’s the battle of the injured studs . The question isn’t necessarily which will perform better against his scheduled cakewalk match-up, but more, which will play? And even if both play this Sunday, which can we expect to have a bigger role?
Benson is reportedly “ready to play”, while head coach Marvin Lewis seems unwilling to commit to a status for the star running back for Week 12. Benson’s hip figures to be almost (if not completely) 100 percent, but with an easy opponent like the Cleveland Browns, it wouldn’t shock us to see the Bengals sit him for the second consecutive week.
As for Michael Turner, while he hasn’t practiced all week, his high ankle sprain is reportedly healing faster than expected, although head coach Mike Smith isn’t saying anything about it.
The word is that Jason Snelling is going to be the starter this week, especially considering the Falcons haven’t even begun to discuss a timetable for Turner’s return.
Verdict: Both running backs hold good value if they play this week, and both have a decent shot at a return. However, we’re leaning toward the guy that has the hip injury, and not an ankle injury that can easily be re- injured. Run with Benson if you must.
Lee Evans, WR, BUF (vs. MIA) VS. Terrell Owens, WR, BUF (vs. MIA)
This is the matchup between the Bills top two receivers, pitting the guy Ryan Fitzpatrick used to be enamored with (Evans), against the guy he hooked-up with constantly in Week 11. Will Evans get the bulk of the looks like usual, or has T.O. truly broken out?
The noodle-armed Ryan Fitzpatrick was unwilling to go deep to Terrell Owens when he first took over as the starter two weeks ago, and it was the same story in spot duty before that. However, he and Owens connected on a 98-yard scoring strike last week, while Owens ended the game with 197 yards receiving.
Verdict: We like Evans to garner some more attention due to his better catching ability and Fitzpatrick’s tendency to throw shorter passes, but Owens’ potential should have him being your choice as an elite WR3 this week.

24. Terrell Owens vs. MIA
25. Michael Crabtree vs. JAC

27. Steve Breaston @ TEN

36. Malcom Floyd vs. KC
37. Braylon Edwards vs. CAR
38. Laveranues Coles vs. CLE
39. Devery Henderson vs. NE
40. Lance Long @ SD
Notes: Don’t buy into Sidney Rice’s hot streak ending anytime soon. The Chicago Bears’ pass defense is atrocious, and Brett Favre and the Minnesota passing offense shows no signs of lowing down.
We like all Seattle receivers this week, and even like Brandon Gibson’s chances against the Seahawks (if you’re desperate), considering his 17 looks he got last week, at least you’ll know he should be involved in the offense.
Our bottom five this week is made-up of the over-hyped Floyd (don’t use him), three other guys who haven’t done anything recently (and likely won’t), and Lance Long, who we actually like going forward.

After we saw some real dud performances out of the tight end position over Thanksgiving, there’s still some hope with a solid crop left for Sunday and Monday.
Read on to see where the top options rank , followed by some quick notes :
1. Dallas Clark @ HOU
2. Antonio Gates vs. KC
3. Tony Gonzalez vs. TB
4. Vernon Davis vs. JAC
5. Kellen Winslow @ ATL
6. Brent Celek vs. WAS
7. Greg Olsen @ MN (Start )
8. Heath Miller @ BAL
9. Visanthe Shiancoe vs. CHI
10. John Carlson @ STL
11. Dustin Keller vs. CAR
12. Jeremy Shockey vs. NE
13. James Casey vs. IND
14. Fred Davis @ PHI
15. Marcedes Lewis @ SF
Notes: The top four need no explanation, but Kellen Winslow could even be argued as a better option than Vernon Davis this week, as he’s facing a weak Atlanta secondary that has been terrible against tight ends in 2009.
Ditto for Greg Olsen going against the Minnesota Vikings, who can’t seem to stop any tight ends they face, save for shutting John Carlson down last week.
Speaking of Carlson, the last time he faced the St. Louis Rams, he and Matt Hasselbeck connected on seven passes for 97 yards and two scores. Despite a poor couple of games lately, we like his chances this week.
Last but not least, we’re still quietly vouching for James Casey on the Texans. He only totaled 33 yards off of two catches last week, but showed his playmaking ability with a 32-yard catch. We like his chances at some solid opportunities in what could be a shootout against the Colts.

Week 12 figures to be another interesting and exciting week in the 2009 NFL season, but considering our solid 12-4 record with last week’s picks, it appears we have a solid grasp on what to expect from this year’s teams.
Forgive us for not calling upset specials like Kansas City over Pittsburgh and Oakland over Cincinnati.
For all your upsets and predicted scores , read on.
Green Bay Packers @ Detroit Lions
The Lions could be without Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson, which is some pretty awful news, considering the last time they were both out they lost to the St. Louis Rams. It probably wouldn’t matter either way, though, as Aaron Rodgers is likely to do what Brady Quinn did to them, times 10.
Packers 44, Lions 17
Oakland Raiders @ Dallas Cowboys
Tony Romo and the Cowboys’ passing game have been in a funk for the second time this season, which should put further emphasis on Dallas running the ball. If they do that, they will eliminate Oakland’s only true threat (their pass defense), and they should win this one easily.
Cowboys 24, Raiders 9
New York Giants @ Denver Broncos
The Giants just ended their own four-game skid, and now the Broncos are attempting to do the same. We’re going with the team that got it together last week, rather than the one that looks completely lost.
Giants 31, Broncos 21
Miami Dolphins @ Buffalo Bills
Ricky Williams looked a little worn down last week after a huge carry increase, but that will happen when you’re 32 and not used to being a featured back. Forget about that and embrace what Miami is doing on offense, as Williams and co. will run all over the Bills’ awful run defense.
Dolphins 27, Bills 17
Carolina Panthers @ New York Jets
The Jets’ only real chance in this game is to get Thomas Jones and the rushing attack going early and then allow Mark Sanchez to play pressure-free football. They can’t have Sanchez flinging passes around against Carolina’s elite pass defense.
Panthers 24, Jets 21
Cleveland Browns @ Cincinnati Bengals
The Browns showed the world that Brady Quinn might be special and that, as bad as they may be, there is a little bit of optimism in this offense. Sadly for them, however, the Bengals already dropped a stink to the Raiders last week and will be too focused to do it again.
Bengals 30, Browns 17
Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans
Upset special, numero uno. The Texans are two Kris Brown missed field goals away from potentially being 7-3 and are facing a 10-0 Colts team that is just begging to lose a game. The Texans win a wild one.
Texans 36, Colts 34

Every week, we take a look at the best available options due to injuries, roster status, and weekly matchups, that could potentially be available to you in your league.
It’s important to constantly be on the watch for gems that slip through the cracks, especially with injuries knocking out key players for the season such as Owen Daniels and Ronnie Brown, and other players like Michael Turner and Cedric Benson nursing injuries.
Take a look at this week’s Waiver Wire Watch , where we show you the best options that are available in over 50 percent of all Yahoo! Sports leagues:
Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco 49ers (Available in 81 Percent of Leagues )
Smith jumped back into the fantasy spotlight with three touchdown passes, all in the second half, against the Packers last week.
While the 49ers have only been able to win one game with Smith under center, but there’s no doubt that his strong arm and style of play have made the 49ers a more capable and exciting offense.
He has a nice matchup this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and could be a solid option to turn to if you don’t like your other options.
Vince Young, QB, Tennessee Titans (82 percent)
Young hasn’t dazzled with touchdowns or passing yardage (and likely won’t), but he’s been trustworthy and fairly dependable during the Titans’ four-game winning streak. He has thrown three touchdowns to just one interception over that span, and even added 73 yards rushing on the ground in Week 11.
If you need a dual-threat passer who can get you safe points without losing the game on turnovers, Young could be worth a look.
Matthew Stafford, QB, Detroit Lions (87 percent)
Stafford broke-out against the Cleveland Browns last week throwing for 422 yards and five touchdowns, including the game-winning score. True, it was the Browns, but Stafford’s poise and play-making ability has improved steadily over the course of the season.
While he’s not guaranteed to face the Green Bay Packers in Week 12, we still suggest you pick him up, as his potential could mean for a solid stretch run to end the season.
Chad Henne, QB, Miami Dolphins (90 percent)
Henne isn’t asked to do much, as Miami runs the ball and dumps short passes off to running backs and receivers. But for a second-year guy basically playing his rookie season, Henne is putting up solid numbers.
He has scored six touchdowns in his last seven games, while topping 170 yards passing in five of those contests. Like Vince Young, he’s not going to win your game for you each week, but he’s a better alternative to Kyle Boller or Bruce Gradkowski.
Brady Quinn, QB, Cleveland Browns (95 percent)
Quinn had a huge game against the Detroit Lions last week, passing for 304 yards and four touchdowns, giving him his best game as a pro, and offering a ton of optimism toward the future.
Sure, it was against a horrible Lions pass defense, but if what we saw last week is the beginning of something special, Quinn definitely deserves a roster spot.
His matchup against a solid Cincinnati pass defense this week isn’t envious, but considering Bruce Gradkowski didn’t look bad against them, Quinn still has a shot at making something happen.

We had a great showing last week , giving you the right calls more often than not, while posting an 11-4 record for Week 11.
We suggested that you start Eli Manning and Ricky Williams, two moves that paid off big time, while a few of our sit calls, Carson Palmer, Chad Ochocinco, and Jay Cutler also helped your teams if you followed our advice .
Read on for the five guys to start, the five to leave on the bench, and the five to keep an eye on heading into Week 12 :
Start
Matt Ryan, QB, Atlanta Falcons
Ryan looked much better than he has over the past few weeks in a tough battle with the New York Giants, and should continue to improve with the nice matchup with Tampa Bay this week.
Prediction: 24-34, 296 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT
Justin Forsett, RB, Seattle Seahawks
Forsett ran hard against the Minnesota Vikings’ elite run defense, but finished with just nine yards on nine carries. However, his athleticism and play-making ability allowed him to reel off 80 yards on eight receptions, and he was even able to find a rushing touchdown late in the game.
Julius Jones is expected to make his return this week, but even if he does, we expect Forsett to remain a big part of what Seattle’s offense is doing, especially with a soft matchup against the St. Louis Rams.
Prediction: 10 att, 65 yds, 0 TD, 6 rec, 63 yds, 1 TD
Jason Snelling, RB, Atlanta Falcons
After pounding out 80+ total yards and two scores against the Giants, it looks like Snelling will get another start with Michael Turner likely sitting out for the second straight week. It’s obvious that Snelling can put up solid production behind Atlanta’s big offensive line, and with a nice matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, you just can’t sit the guy.
Prediction: 17 att, 81 yds, 1 TD, 4 rec, 35 yds, 0 TD
Ryan Grant, RB, Green Bay Packers
Jamal Lewis and Chris Jennings ran all over the Detroit Lions, so what makes anyone think the improving Ryan Grant won’t be able to? Grant has been very impressive in recent weeks, averaging more than 101 total yards per game in his last three outings. The Lions won’t be able to stop anything the Packers throw at them, so don’t even think about this one: Put him in your lineup.
Prediction: 19 att, 112 yds, 1 TD, 3 rec, 29 yds, 0 TD
John Carlson, TE, Seattle Seahawks
Carlson has been very disappointing lately, catching just one pass in his last two games, while getting blanked against the Minnesota Vikings. We could stay down on him and suggest a sit, but he’s facing the Rams this week, and the last time he faced them in the season opener he went off for 95 yards and two scores.
Even if he doesn’t duplicate those numbers, he should put up respectable stats this week.
Prediction: 5 rec, 62 yds, 1 TD
Sit
Tony Romo, QB, Dallas Cowboys
It took Romo almost the entire game last week against the Redskins to throw a touchdown pass, and the past few weeks have shown us that he just isn’t getting it done. Opposing defenses are figuring out how to stop Miles Austin, and it is directly impacting Romo’s production. He shouldn’t fare much better with a tough matchup against the Oakland Raiders and their stingy pass defense.
Prediction: 23-37, 278 yds, 2 TD, 4 INT
Matt Forte, RB, Chicago Bears
The one (and only) thing to like about Matt Forte in 2009 is that his role in the Bears offense is extremely dependable. He will always get the touches to give him the chance to be a stud back, but with tough opponents and a horrible offensive line, his production will be no better than average.
Forte has just one 100+ yard rushing day on the season, but has totaled 100+ yards five times, simply because he remains so active as a receiver. There’s always promise with Forte, but not this week, as he’ll face a staunch Minnesota run defense.
Prediction: 11 att, 35 yds, 0 TD, 6 rec, 44 yds, 0 TD
Tim Hightower/Chris Wells, RB, Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals have really done a great job at committing to the ground game and making their offense a well-balanced machine. However, regardless of the progress of both Hightower and Wells, they go up against a stiff Tennessee run defense this week, and considering they were borderline Flex plays or low-end RB2’s anyways, they don’t make for good starts this week.
Hightower Prediction: 11 att, 33 yds, 1 TD, 3 rec, 19 yds, 0 TD
Wells Prediction: 8 att, 42 yds, 0 TD, 2 rec, 9 yds, 0 TD
Kevin Smith, RB, Detroit Lions
Smith is coming off of a weak rushing effort, but was heavily involved in the passing game in Detroit’s victory over the Cleveland Browns, registering more than 100 receiving yards and a score.
However, with the possibility that both Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson could miss the Thanksgiving game, and the fact that the Green Bay Packers have been solid against the run, this doesn’t look to be the best week to use Smith.
Prediction: 15 att, 40 yds, 0 TD, 3 rec, 40 yds, 0 TD
Malcom Floyd, WR, San Diego Chargers
Floyd has been getting an unbelievable amount of hype since entering the starting lineup on a full-time basis, but for no good reason. He hasn’t caught more than three balls in a game all season, and regardless of his size and potential, simply isn’t a big factor in San Diego’s offense.
Prediction: 3 rec, 47 yds, 0 TD
Sleeper
Chad Henne, QB, Miami Dolphins
Henne hasn’t been dazzling since taking over for the injured Chad Pennington, but he definitely has a fine hold on how to manage the Dolphins offense. As long as Ricky Williams and the rest of the Wildcat is working effectively, Henne has a chance on any given day to help you out in a pinch.
Prediction: 14-22, 177 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rock Cartwright, RB, Washington Redskins
With both Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts injured, Cartwright will step into action as the Redskins start this week. After solid production against a steady Cowboys defense (140 total yards), Cartwright makes for a good Flex play in Week 12, despite going up against a stout Eagles run defense.
Prediction: 14 att, 54 yds, 1 TD, 4 rec, 43 yds, 0 TD
Jordy Nelson, WR, Green Bay Packers
Nelson returned from a knee injury against the 49ers to catch four passes for 32 yards, including a touchdown. He and teammate James Jones are risky fantasy plays, considering they share time at the third receiver spot, but both have value, and Nelson is one to keep your eye on.
Prediction: 4 rec, 56 yds, 1 TD
Mohamed Massaqoui, WR, Cleveland Browns
He’s not a suggested start by any means, but as Brady Quinn’s top option and a decent down-field threat, Massaquoi will at the very worst continue to get opportunities to succeed. He’ll have a tough time against a solid Bengals pass defense this week, but he could be a decent Flex play for the stretch run if you’re looking for a receiver with good potential.
Prediction: 4 rec, 75 yds, 0 TD
James Casey, TE, Houston Texans
Casey wasn’t phenomenal in his first real attempt at replacing Owen Daniels (IR), but he did catch two passes for 33 yards, with one being an impressive 32-yarder. As he gets more comfortable within the offense and builds his chemistry with Matt Schaub, it’s only a matter of time until he’s putting up solid numbers. With the Colts pass defense dealing with loads of injuries, Week 12’s match-up could have him finding success sooner, rather than later.
Prediction: 5 rec, 62 yds, 1 TD
