Daily Haze: Big Ben in trouble

Daily Haze, fantasy football, NFL, sports news

A simple “Ben Roethlisberger assault” search turned up a bevy of information on yesterday’s biggest story in the NFL via Google.

Everyone—except ESPN—was talking about it.

That does strike me as odd.

ESPN did the same thing last year around this time when it was reported that Brett Favre had contacted the Lions with tips on the Packers. Not that anything came of it, but the news was significant and, usually, right up ESPN’s alley.

Perhaps there are ulterior motives at play? Like ESPN hoping to have a professional relationship with Roethlisberger down the line. But, as the big lead pointed out yesterday, the whole ordeal seemed rather puzzling.

The self-proclaimed “World Wide Leader in Sports Entertainment” pulled a Braylon Edwards yesterday and dropped the ball.

Fantasy impact? There does not appear to be much of a chance he misses playing time, nor should he miss any practice.

Do remember, however, that his worst season as a pro—as in failed to make the playoffs—was prefaced by a tumultuous offseason that culminated in Roethlisberger being involved in a motorcycle accident, prior to the start of the season.

It’s just something to keep in mind.

Here are today’s great reads:

Monday morning rehab

MMR, fantasy football, NFL, injuries, player updatesAfter a few slow weeks due to inactivity in the NFL, the Monday Morning Rehab is back to near capacity again this week.

Six players grace the halls of the MMR this week as NFL training camps approach. Football action will begin for teams across the country as early as the end of this week.

Hard to believe that football is back already.

Once we — football fans — get to this point in the offseason, it does not seem so long after all. There is just enough football action between the Super Bowl and training camps to keep fans satiated. Just enough to keep us interested.

Thank goodness for that. Look, baseball and basketball are great sports in their own rights. Baseball was one of my favorites as a child, but the scandals of the last few years have really soured the sport in my eyes. Basketball is getting better and better by the year, but nothing captivates the American fan quite like football.

So is it too soon to ask if you are ready for some football?!? The wait is nearly over.

Cadillac Williams [RB, Buccaneers]

From RotoWorld:

Beat writer Stephen Holder thinks Cadillac Williams (torn patellar tendon) will start training camp on the “physically unable to perform” list.

Safe to say The Hazean is rooting for Caddy once again this summer.

It would take a moderate miracle for Williams to see live action this season, but I would not put anything past him after recovering from what was called a career-ending injury two years ago. Despite being a Saints fan, I find Williams’ passion and work ethic refreshing. Keep working hard Caddy.

Lance Moore [WR, Saints]

From NFL GridIron Gab:

Moore had a tough offseason, tearing his labrum and dislocating his shoulder while lifting weights back in April. Though it all, Moore thinks he’ll be ready to go by two or three weeks into training camp.

This could explain Moore’s relatively low average draft position in mock drafts so far this summer.

As long as he stays off the field long enough to fully recover from the shoulder injury, the Saints will do their best to protect him through camp. The No. 2 receiver in a prolific offense, Moore may not match last year’s output but should still be more than serviceable in all fantasy formats. I would welcome him as a WR3 with the upside of an every-week fantasy starter.

Carson Palmer [QB, Bengals]

From FanHouse:

And while he admitted his arm strength wasn’t where he wanted it to be during a late June minicamp, Palmer told FanHouse this week he’s now 100 percent physically, and confident in his belief that the elbow shouldn’t hamper him in 2009.

Palmer may be one of the most undervalued fantasy players heading into draft season, but news like this will quickly improve his stock.

Training camp will be the true test for Palmer. The Bengals, however, may not let him loose for a few weeks into it. By the time Cincinnati’s first preseason game comes around, fantasy owners should get a good glimpse of Palmer’s true health. By keeping him mostly under wraps, the Bengals are going to help keep Palmer’s profile low — and also prevent him from moving up too much in the fantasy rankings.

That is good news for fantasy owners looking to grab him at a bargain rate.

Brandon Marshall [WR, Broncos]

From RotoWorld:

Speaking on NFL Network’s Total Access, Brandon Marshall (hip surgery) says he’s “good and ready” for football activity after performing a 360 dunk and a followup windmill earlier this week.

Finally some good news regarding Marshall.

Now if he can stay out of trouble and find some happiness in Denver, things might start looking up again for the promising young receiver. While Denver has stated that he will not be traded, fantasy owners are secretly hoping he somehow lands in Chicago with Jay Cutler. Perhaps just a pipe dream, but crossing my fingers nonetheless.

Derek Anderson [QB, Browns]

From ProFootballTalk:

The 2007 Pro Bowler suffered a calf injury during Cleveland’s final minicamp, but the injury was never believed to be serious.  Now there is confirmation the injury is no longer an issue.

Anderson has his work cut out for him this training camp. He supposedly is trailing Brady Quinn in the early race for the Browns’ starting quarterback job. All hands — and calves and knees — will need to be on deck for DA to keep up with the younger Quinn.

Sidney Rice [WR, Vikings]

From RotoWorld:

Sidney Rice worked out with no knee brace Wednesday for the first time in the last ten months.

Finally.

Talk about a slow healer. Rice is healthy for the first time since very early last season and just in time for training camp.

All eyes in Minnesota remain on Brett Favre. If he becomes the Vikings next quarterback, expect the competition at wide receiver to really heat up. Between Rice, Bernard Berrian and rookie Percy Harvin, Favre certainly would have some decent weapons at his disposal.

The MMR will continue to run every Monday morning as scheduled during the offseason. If you have an injury update or want an update on a certain player, please leave a note in the comments.

Daily Haze: This Year’s Rookie Running Backs

Published: July 16, 2009

Matt Forte. Steve Slaton. Chris Johnson. Kevin Smith. Jonathan Stewart.

Last season’s rookie class was boss.

Even the names not on the list above, which are the five players who finished in the top-25 among running backs in most leagues, have lots of potential: Darren McFadden, Rashard Mendenhall, Tim Hightower, Ray Rice, Felix Jones, and Jamaal Charles to name a few.

One heck of an infusion of talent to the fantasy football running back pool.

So how will this year’s rookie class of running backs fare?

Donald Brown, Beanie Wells, Shonn Greene, Knowshon Moreno, and LeSean McCoy are going to be compared and contrasted to the great class of 2008 all season. It is going to be tough for all of these guys to replicate what last year’s rookies did. Five of these guys cracking this season’s top 25? Highly doubtful.

Nothing against the talent in the 2009 class, but last year’s class was a special one that comes around only so often.

Here are today’s great reads.

Rookie Report: Five NFL Rookies Ready To Start

Published: July 15, 2009

commentNo Comments

The Rookie Report is back, baby!

With the season just under two months away, fantasy owners are foaming at the mouth for live football action. Training camps, fellas, only a few weeks away. Hold off for just a few more weeks, you can do it.

And if you cannot wait, at least consume some fantasy knowledge. Marc’s first Rookie Report since around the NFL Draft covers five of this year’s rookie who could start from day one. Important info for fantasy owners, no doubt.

I was taking a look at this year’s crop of rookies and I wanted to see which players have the best chance to start from day one. I have compiled a list of the top-five rookies, in no particular order, that could be NFL starters as of this moment.

1. Knowshon Moreno, RB, Broncos – Moreno has the speed and moves for the NFL and he is going to a Broncos team that drafted him to be their star running back. Moreno can catch the ball out the backfield which should help starting quarterback Kyle Orton in the passing game.

2. Michael Crabtree, WR, 49ers – Crabtree was the No. 1 prospect and athlete coming into the draft and he is not going to disappoint Niners’ fans. Crabtree might already be the best wide receiver for the 49ers. If he can get some accurate throws from the maturing quarterbacks in San Francisco, he has a chance to break rookie receiving records.

3. Beanie Wells, RB, Cardinals – The Cardinals realized quickly after promoting Tim “Touchdown” Hightower to the starting running back position that he isn’t an every-down back in the NFL.

Arizona was excited to see Wells sitting on the board still when it was their pick in the first round. They plan on using Wells as their primary running back with Hightower as a change-of-pace running back.

4. Percy Harvin, WR, Minnesota – Harvin has an explosive step comparable to all the top play makers in the NFL. If Brett Favre joins the Vikings team, Harvin could benefit greatly from the quick slant that Favre loves to throw. Harvin needs Favre in order to have a huge impact as a rookie.

5. Matthew Stafford, QB, Lions – Sure the Lions have Daunte Culpepper slated as the starting quarterback, but Stafford is the future of the franchise. Fans always want to win now, especially Lions’ fans. After the rookie success of Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan in 2008, Stafford could be thrown into the fire this season.

He has an NFL arm but tends to make a few mental mistakes. There is great news for Stafford, though: He gets to throw the ball to Calvin Johnson. That would make any NFL quarterback smile.

Monday Morning Rehab

Published: July 13, 2009

MMRThe Home Run Derby is tonight.

Yawn.

Tell you what, this weekend was pretty miserable from a sports standpoint. Almost nothing going on save baseball.

I enjoy playing fantasy baseball, sure, but watching it? Thanks, but no thanks.

Nothing captures the vigilance of fans quite like football. Which is why, instead of watching baseball or anything else this weekend, I spent the majority of my time playing Tecmo Super Bowl.

What does it say, exactly, about baseball when I spend my time playing a football video game from the early 1990s? Boring could be the right word. Meaningless often fits, if you do not follow a contending team. Dull, too, perhaps.

I promise my bagging on baseball will end soon enough.

In just a few weeks, football training camps will open. And that will be the end of my baseball rants until…well…next summer.

Kevin Jones—RB, Bears

From RotoWorld:

Jones is now 19 months removed from ACL surgery, and running backs coach Tim Spencer says he’s back to where he was before the injury. It will be hard to take Matt Forte off the field, but the Bears are adamant that Jones will play a bigger role this year in a “1-2 punch.”

Hard to believe anyone could cut significantly into Matt Forte’s playing time after last season. But there is a chance another back could help spell Forte and keep him from being overworked.

Chances are Jones will be tried in this role. But year after year, Jones’ body finds a way to break down. If the Bears ease him into a role, perhaps he could make it to the end of the season. However, as it stands right now, I would not expect Jones to have a significant impact on Forte’s fantasy value.

Chase Coffman—TE, Bengals

From RotoWorld:

Bengals rookie TE Chase Coffman says he’s “very close to being 100 percent” recovered from his senior-year foot fracture.

Good news for the Bengals’ offense. Finally, a pass-catching tight end for Carson Palmer.

The Bengals could be a sleeper offense this season. With a healthy Palmer back in the fold, Cincinnati might light up the scoreboard once again. That makes Chad Johnson, Laveranues Coles, Chris Henry, and Coffman all worthy of a look by fantasy owners this draft season. Heck, even Cedric Benson deserves a little more respect.

Not too much yet, though.

The MMR will continue to run every Monday morning as scheduled during the offseason. If you have an injury update or want an update on a certain player, please leave a note in the comments.

The Denver Broncos: A Team In Turmoil

Published: July 10, 2009

commentNo Comments

After the firing of head coach Mike Shanahan at the end of last year’s football season, the Broncos have been the talk of the NFL. Owner Pat Bowlen decided it was time for a change in Denver when he fired Shanahan.

He hired Brian Xanders as General Manager and former Patriots’ Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels as head coach. The new regime took over and—little did I know— immediately started making changes to the Broncos’ roster.

The first big change started as a doozy. Rumors circulated that the Broncos were trying to trade for Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel even though they already had Jay Cutler on the roster. Oops.

Cutler took this news as a sign of disrespect and demanded a trade. The team eventually obliged, sending Cutler to the Bears. In return, the Broncos received a few draft picks and former Bears’ starting quarterback Kyle Orton.

Now the Broncos are dealing with trade demands from superstar wide receiver Brandon Marshall. Marshall has continued to get into trouble off-the-field as a member of the Broncos and feels a change of scenery is necessary to have a long, successful NFL career.

The question fantasy owners want answered: How does Denver’s tumultuous offseason affect fantasy football this season?

Cutler’s stats probably will decrease a little due to the loss uber-talented wide receivers Marshall and Eddie Royal. But Matt Forte owners should rejoice because opposing defenses will no longer be about to stack the line against the run with the threat of Cutler and the deep ball.

Orton’s outlook really cannot be determined until Marshall’s status is known for sure. If Marshall somehow stays in Denver, Orton could be in for a great season with Royal and Marshall catching passes along with sure-handed rookie Knowshon Moreno coming out of the backfield.

As for Moreno, ranked by The Hazean as the second-best rookie running back this year, his fantasy production depends on Marshall as well. In fact, Marshall is the difference maker in terms of fantasy production for just about all of the offensive players around him, especially Royal.

Fantasy aside, I wonder if Bowlen is kicking himself for firing Mike Shanahan and starting this high-profile chain of reactions?

Daily Haze: Chad OchoCinco to Tweet During NFL Games

Published: July 10, 2009

Friday is here, and what better way to celebrate then with Daily Haze. What does everyone have on tap for this weekend?  Yours truly will be heading to New Orleans to decide on the groom’s cake for my wedding.

I’ve got the design narrowed down to a few choices, but I’m not set on any of them yet.  But enough about me….

Here are today’s great reads:

  • Chad OchoCinco is trying to take Tweeting to a whole new level by using Twitter during NFL games. Obviously, the NFL isn’t down to clown. I can only imagine that his tweeting would be confined to the sidelines or halftime, but whipping out the cell phone during an end zone celebrations isn’t entirely out of the question.  [ProFootballTalk]
  • How does your league regulate the waiver wire rules? It can be a difficult and often testy conversation between managers, as nobody wants to feel like they are getting the short end of the stick. Here is a breakdown of a couple strategies to use when deciding on which way to go. [Fantasy Football Fools]
  • These running backs could end up being steals in the mid to late rounds of your draft. Find out why Benson, Jones, or Smith could ensure your fantasy success this season. [Bruno Boys]

Fantasy Football: Five Mid-Round QBs Every Owner Wants

Published: July 9, 2009

commentNo Comments

Are fantasy quarterbacks the new kickers?

Year-after-year, more than a handful of fantasy owners reach for a quarterback in the first two-to-three rounds. Sure, guys like Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady can be the cornerstone of a fantasy team. No doubt about that.

But so can guys like Philip Rivers, Jay Cutler and even Tyler Thigpen last season.

Why take a quarterback so early in the draft when every season a few mid-round quarterbacks emerge to become legitimate QB1s?

First answer that comes to mind is security. There is inherent risk involved in trying to determine which mid-round quarterback will become a QB1. Brees, Manning and Brady, meanwhile, should—barring injury—easily finish the season as a QB1.

Another thought that comes to mind is the scoring system. Chances are much better that at least one of the big three will throw for 30 or even 40 or more touchdowns.

At six points per touchdown pass, the right quarterback could lead fantasy owners to a title almost single-handedly. Brady’s 50 touchdowns two years ago helped the majority of his fantasy owners at least reach the fantasy playoffs.

Those sounds like good arguments for taking a quarterback early in the draft. It certainly is a safe strategy, but not always the best to employ for this reason alone: Instead of drafting a top-tier QB, an owner could be adding depth at two of the more injury-prone and difficult-to-project positions—running back and wide receiver.

Just like kickers, perhaps the best strategy for drafting a quarterback this year is to wait as long as possible before doing so.

By the end of the fantasy season, it tends to be the owner(s) with the best depth at running back and wide receiver consistently in the fantasy playoffs.

Think also about the time of year the fantasy playoffs begin—winter, not generally the friendliest of seasons for fantasy quarterbacks. See Tom Brady’s fantasy playoff performances during his 50-touchdown season for reasons not to draft a top tier QB so early

(Disclaimer: Of course, Brady did lead most of his teams to the playoffs and certainly more than enough of those teams won their league that year as well.)

If you are willing to explore deeper options at QB this year, consider the five quarterbacks below floating around with some of the more valuable wide receivers in the middle rounds of fantasy drafts.

The average draft positions (ADP) for each of the players listed below were taken from two of the leading mock draft sites, Fantasy Football Calculator and Mock Draft Central. ADP current as of July 8, 2009.

Matt Schaub, Texans

2008 stats: 3,043 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, 10 interceptions
Fantasy Football Calculator ADP: 73.9 (Round 7.02)
Mock Draft Central ADP: 79.43

Has all the tools—big arm, offensive weapons, plays in a Dome—to be a fantasy stud. Just needs to make it through a season for once. He promises that he will get through the entire 2009 season without injury.

Fantasy owners need to decide one way or another about Schaub before he can fulfill that promise. For a mid-round pick, the risk is minimal and the reward is very high.

Matt Ryan, Falcons

2008 stats: 3,440 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, 11 interceptions
Fantasy Football Calculator ADP: 68.7 (Round 6.09)
Mock Draft Central ADP: 74.29

Ryan navigated the Falcons through his rookie season in superb fashion, leading Atlanta back to the postseason. Expectations are exceptionally high for Ryan now in his second season behind center.

The addition of Tony Gonzalez adds more pizazz to the passing game and signals the Falcons plan to let Ryan loose this year. 2009 could easily be his break-out fantasy season and the price is not very steep for his services.

Carson Palmer, Bengals

2008 stats: 731 yards, 3 touchdowns, 4 interceptions
Fantasy Football Calculator ADP: 85.7 (Round 8.02)
Mock Draft Central ADP: 90.40

Easy to see by his 2008 numbers that last season did not materialize for Palmer. An elbow injury kept him on the sideline most of the year, but did not require surgery. Hopefully, that is a good thing and he remains in good health this year.

For a guy near the top of the quarterback rankings just a few years ago, Palmer can be had at bargain rates right now in fantasy drafts. The risk: Palmer’s elbow is very relevant, but again the price is right given his upside.

David Garrard, Jaguars

2008 stats: 3,620 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, 13 interceptions (322 rushing yards, 2 touchdowns)
Fantasy Football Calculator ADP: 131.7 (Round 11.12)
Mock Draft Central ADP: 120.72

Garrard did the best a quarterback could possibly do last season behind a patchwork and depleted offensive line. The Jags hope to protect a little better this season and also added a reliable receiver in veteran Torry Holt.

Fantasy owners get the added bonus of Garrard’s legs, which could generate a little more on the ground this year in the absence of Fred Taylor.

All-in-all, Garrard is a solid fantasy quarterback capable of starting for fantasy owners a majority of the weeks during the season.

Matt Hasselbeck, Seahawks

2008 stats: 1,216 passing yards, 5 touchdowns, 10 interceptions
Fantasy Football Calculator ADP: 106.7 (Round 9.11)
Mock Draft Central ADP: 109.38

Another one with greatly underwhelming 2008 numbers. Injuries and bad play all around derailed Hasselbeck last year, but he claims to be fully recovered this offseason.

If so, Seattle did its best this offseason to improve an uncharacteristically anemic offense that should allow Hass to recover from a poor showing last season. T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Deion Branch and John Carlson form a nice little trio of passing targets for Hasselbeck.

Daily Haze: Tecmo Super Bowl

Published: July 8, 2009

Ahhh, the early 90s.

Michael Jackson was still alive and pumping out hits. Hi-tops were in style. Notre Dame was still decent at football. The Saints had arguably the best linebacking corps in the history of the NFL. And Nintendo was all the rage.

I spent countless childhood hours playing Tecmo Super Bowl for the regular Nintendo. Arguably one of the greatest football video games ever made. I still play it to this day at least once a month with a few other nostalgic Nintendo buddies from work.

Back then, a weekend sleep-over was required to play against friends. But not anymore thanks to the invention of this great thing they call the internet. Now friends, or just TSB fans, can play over the ‘net in a few simple steps.

Fancy a game of Tecmo Super Bowl? Head over to The Tecmo Players Circuit to learn about online play. When you get up and running, hit me up via AIM (Mikus the Tiger) so we can go head-to-head.
