Neither of these games are on TV, BBC Wales having opted for the delights of Leinster vs Ospreys. But we still get the highlights show on Sunday, huzzah! Edinburgh’s test looks the sterner of the two with Ulster welcoming back Stephen Ferris into their team and already operating at somewhere near full strength.
The Dragons are a good test for Glasgow though, to see if they can kick on and put last season’s worrying inconsistency behind them.
Oh and here is the squad for the “Gael Force”, the third team that will take part in the new British and Irish Cup that will prove a stern test for this lot, along with existing sides Ayr and Heriots. No word on what will happen to those players like Grant Anderson or young stand-off Rory Hutton who could potentially appear for both.

Is Big Nathan The New Rocky?

Elsom that is, not Balboa. After his Wikipedia entry was recently amended to suggest he would be moving to Wales (the Ospreys and the Scarlets simultaneously), it seems that Scottish Lion and general all-round troublemaking loon Nathan Hines is now set to leave French Top 14 Champs Perpignan for Irish province Leinster, where he can team up with fellow Lions BOD, Fitzgerald, Kearney and Heaslip, and aim to fill the Australian sized gap left by the return home of Rocky Elsom. Presumably, the USAP lot are wound up that he prized a Lions shirt over victory in the championship and have decided to let him go. This could be a valuable signing for Leinster, and should be able to give plenty of insight into the Irish camp come Six Nations time…
It’s a shame that one of the pro-teams couldn’t have snapped him up, but with the likes of beanpole Richie Gray coming through the ranks at Glasgow perhaps youth development is more of a focus these days – hardly a bad thing.
It is also being reported that Euan Murray has actually broken his leg on tour in South Africa and will be out for longer than feared. In addition, he could possibly not be ready in time for the autumn internationals.
Broussow Gets Second Crack At Lions

The Cheetahs’ flanker Heinrich Broussow, who almost single handedly buggered up the Lions perfect tour record, has been given a late call up to the Springbok squad. He’ll cover for possibly injured Schalk Burger. He may yet have to fight for a place behind utility forward Danie Roussow, but hopefully the extra B in his name will give him the edge he needs.
Over in the Lions’ camp, Shane Williams has been hit with a stomach bug. As he has not travelled for the match against the Southern Kings—Tommy Bowe is in his place as cover—this will leave the Lions scrum half options severely limited today. This is the case especially if Mikey Blade fails a fitness test this morning. Time to parachute crazy Chris Cusiter in methinks.
The injuries are starting to tell a little (Flutey’s knee, Kearney’s dead leg, practically everyone’s shoulders) but the hope is still that most players will be available for Test selection. The result of this should be announced on Wednesday. As a reminder, so far Ferris and Halfpenny have left the party, Ryan Jones should never have joined it due to being concussed and O’ Leary, Shanklin, Flannery and Quinlan were left at home what seems like so long ago!
UPDATE: Ugo Monye will join the team, and Shane has recovered sufficiently to take his place on the bench.
Lions Fall Off The Ark Two by Two

Or three, perhaps. More players have joined Tomas O’Leary and Tom Shanklin on the list of Lions casualties, and the tour has not even started.
Alan Quinlan’s ban for gouging was upheld, so he will not tour to South Africa. Non-surprise of the year is that Tom Croft will replace him, offering something different in the back row including excellence in the lineout (and additional cover in the second row). Perhaps it is a sign of Scottish decline that our traditional area of strength—the back row—offers no immediate candidate with Strokosch out injured.
In other news hooker Jerry Flannery and winger Leigh Halfpenny both have injuries. Halfpenny’s is not too serious and although he is to be replaced, he will re-join the tour when recovered. This could be an opening for Thom Evans or Chris Paterson to sneak on tour, although the favourite would seem to be Delon Armitage, with Mark Cueto another possibility.
Alongside Irishman Rory Best, Scotland hooker Ross Ford is one of the favourites to replace Flannery who has chipped a bone in his elbow in training. Ford would certainly add some grunt and physicality—plus familiarity with Euan Murray—in the front row, however his line-out throwing might be a concern against the likes of Victor Matfield.
