Smith, the 49ers' former franchise quarterback, got another shot at holding down the starting job Monday afternoon after throwing three second-half touchdowns and nearly leading a ferocious comeback against the Texans in a 24-21 loss.
Smith's lively arm and athleticism bring much more potential and excitement to the 49ers' passing attack, especially with the addition of freshly signed rookie receiver Michael Crabtree.
Smith will make his first NFL start in over two years next week on the road against the Indianapolis Colts.
